I want to revert to stock on my AC68U. This beacause I have encounted a very odd problem. Remote Desktop simply won't work after I switched from my old WNDR3700 (running DD-WRT) to this one. Wake-On-WAN works great but RDP doesn't. So I wanna try and see if it works on stock instead (I guess Wake-On-WAN won't work though).
I did a factory reset in DD-WRT, downloaded the stock firmware from ASUS, changed the file ending to .bin and uploaded it from DD-WRT GUI. It says the uploading has been complete and the router reboots. But oddly enough it boots right into DD-WRT again. What am I missing?

Or to make it easier just change the ending of the stock trx to bin. It's what I do.

Hi there, I really need HELP!!
I just got a brand new RT-AC68U today and upgraded the firmware to DD-WRT v23940. I'm totally lost and would like to restore back to the default ASUS GUI. I know people say it's been discussed but I can't find any clear steps.
Do I change the asus .txn file to .bin and simply upgrade the firmware from Dd-wrt GUI?
Would really really appreciate if someone can help me out here! Thanks so much in advance!!!

Hi, I think your right and you can just flash back to stock by changing the firmware extension to bin and upgrade through the GUI. If that doesn't work then you can download the asus firmware restoration utility and stock firmware. Then while holding down the reset button and plugging the power in you can boot it into restore mode to flash stock through the utliity.
What are you confused about with the firmware btw?

The GUI is just too complicated and confusing to me. I initially thought I needed to flash dd-wrt to install HMA VPN onto the router but realised that the router supports HMA. Also, I noticed DD-WRT seems to slow down the router speed quite a bit.
Just tried the .bin method and it doesn't work
how do I restore using the utility? Worst of all, I'm using a MAC.. Argh!

you can go here to download the utility http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC68U/HelpDesk_Download/
but they don't support mac
are you sure you properly changed the extension and didnt just add another extension to the file?

(doesn't anyone click a link, lol)

Using IE made no different. But ASUS recovery tool worked perfect!
I was more than surprised to see that Wake-On-WAN did work on stock too. So for me there is no real reason to DD-WRT as that's the only feature I use that is normally blocked. And yeah Remote Desktop kicked alive too. It is very weird that it just wouldn't work on DD-WRT...

glad you got it sorted, if stock works for you no need to go the 3rd party firmware route.
WOL (& doing fun things with RDP) likely work on DD-WRT but might have required a more advanced configuration, possibly poking at it from the CLI. That said, I haven't played with WOL on DD-WRT in years (my server never sleeps, lol).

Does this still work on 'revert to stock firmware AC68U' via renaming file extension? The reason as ask this is I want to revert back to stock but have a problem.
When I do the recovery mode it does not give an IP Address via DHCP. The asus recovery utility cannot find the router.
Does renaming the extension still works? .trx to .bin on asus firmware?

Did you try to just flash the asus firmware from within dd-wrt? It's what I do with my rt-ac68u.

Not yet...but since this thread is old, I would like to confirm who already did this because bricking a $250.00 router makes me a sad panda...

It is almost impossible to brick unless you mess with the cfe. $250? Lol. I can't sell used ones for $40 around me.
Also, when using the asus firmware restoration tool, it's best to set a static ip on your computer.
There is also the mini cfe web server.

Has this been resolved or how do I go back to another fw I was using? Don't mean to thread jack. I have the TMobile TM-AC1900 and I uploaded the DD-WRT firmware but this is way too much for what I just wanted to do and get lost in all of the menus. I want to go back to the ASUS Merlin FW.
I was trying to use the following method for when I changed the original fw to ASUS Merling but I get an error using PUTTY and transferring files via WinSCP in the root folder.
Quote:
root@DD-WRT:~# chmod u+x mtd-write
root@DD-WRT:~# ./mtd-write new_cfe.bin boot
./mtd-write: can't load library 'libshared.so'
root@DD-WRT:~# mtd-write2 RT-AC68U_380.69_0.trx linux
-sh: mtd-write2: not found

Also I read something about renaming a .trx file to .bin and I did that for the ASUS Merlin FW I wanted to use but that did not work. I did it through DD-WRT GUI where it states to update the FW, I uploaded but the only thing that occurred was a clean reboot of the system. So I am not sure if I even did that method correctly either.
Was there a way to actually download the ASUS Restore Utility App because on the ASUS website I think they took it away or is not available for download at all. Or how can I revert back using WinSCP and Putty?
